ABOUT THE CAVENDISH

An authentic rural escape deeply connected with the history and landscape of Chatsworth.

Enduring history

Originally the Peacock Inn, The Cavendish at Baslow has served the turnpike between industrial Chesterfield and the spa town of Buxton for hundreds of years. The hotel was acquired by the Chatsworth Estate in the 1830s, and rebuilt as The Cavendish in the 1970s.

The recent refurbishment, led by Nicola Harding, celebrates the historic connection between the hotel, the estate and the local Derbyshire community. Art and artefacts from Chatsworth are paired with locally crafted fittings and textiles, and personal Devonshire family mementos, books and pictures.

Heritage-inspired design

The Cavendish’s design reconnects the building with its history and creates a renewed sense of place by drawing on elements from the surrounding Derbyshire countryside.

Inspired by our friends and neighbours

Executive Chef Adam Harper is passionate about sustainable food production. He works closely with local suppliers to keep ingredients fresh and food miles low.

As well as our expertly curated menus, we offer a great selection of drinks, including a number of local gins.

An eclectic collection

The hotel’s artwork has been sourced from the Devonshire family’s own collection, and contains artists such as Elisabeth Frink, Phyllida Barlow, Lisa Brice, Elizabeth Peyton and Jeremy Deller. Watercolours of the house and grounds sit alongside more contemporary works, while black and white historic family photos hang in the bar.
