Explore the Area

Buxton has something to offer whether you want relaxation, adventure, or an unforgettable cultural experience.

In the heart of the Peak District, Buxton is a vibrant spa town renowned for its Georgian and Victorian architecture, therapeutic thermal springs, and stunning landscapes.

The Romans were drawn to the area for its thermal springs. They called the settlement Aquae Arnemetiae (‘The Waters of the Goddess of the Grove’) and built baths that eventually grew into the spa town we see today.

St. Ann’s Well has drawn people to the area for centuries. It’s renowned for its natural thermal spring water and was a destination for medieval pilgrims in search of healing. In the Elizabethan era, Mary Queen of Scots visited Buxton hoping the water would relieve her rheumatism.

Today, there’s plenty to keep visitors entertained, including the Pavilion Gardens with its ornamental lakes, miniature railway, and adventure playground. There’s also a wide choice of independent markets, bars and restaurants where you can sample delicacies like Buxton Blue cheese.

Every July, the Buxton International Festival and Buxton Festival Fringe host world-class opera, theatre, art and comedy.
